Wax Play Candles: Warmth, Colour and Controlled Sensations
Wax Play candles combine warmth, anticipation, sensory play and visual aesthetics in one BDSM practice. Melted wax can be applied to the skin as individual drops, flowing lines or layered patterns, while the candle type, pouring distance, drop size and application rhythm can all be adjusted to change the intensity of the sensation.
The Feral Feelings collection includes classic, low-temperature, neon UV and Strong! BDSM candles. You can choose a gentler introduction to Wax Play, a more pronounced heat sensation, fluorescent wax for ultraviolet scenes or our hottest range for experienced users. Every model is developed specifically for Wax Play, melts evenly and forms flexible wax layers that peel away easily once fully cooled.
We make our BDSM candles by hand in our own workshop in Ukraine. Every formula undergoes multiple rounds of testing, during which we assess its melting range, the behaviour of the drops, the flexibility of the cooled wax, ease of removal from the skin and colour consistency.
If you are new to this practice, read our complete Wax Play guide for beginners. It covers preparation, basic techniques, recommended body areas, essential safety precautions and beginner-friendly ideas for a first session.

How Are BDSM Candles Different from Ordinary Candles?
An ordinary decorative candle and a dedicated BDSM candle may look similar, but they are made for very different purposes. Household, scented, decorative, votive, gel and beeswax candles are not developed for application to the body. They may melt at significantly higher temperatures, contain unpredictable wax blends, fragrances or colourants, and cause burns or skin irritation.
A dedicated BDSM candle has a controlled formula and a clearly stated melting range. Its wax forms consistent drops, cools quickly after reaching the skin and is generally much easier to remove than the wax from many household candles. Even a purpose-made Wax Play candle must still be used carefully: individual sensitivity, the selected body area, pouring distance, drop size and burn duration all affect how the wax actually feels.
How to Choose a Wax Play Candle
Colour is only one part of the decision. When choosing a candle, consider its melting range, wax formula, desired intensity, your previous experience and the lighting you plan to use during the scene.
Melting Range
To help everyone choose a candle that matches their experience and preferred intensity, Feral Feelings offers four temperature ranges.
Low-Temperature Candles: 45–50°C (113–122°F)
Low-temperature candles create a gentler heat sensation. They are well suited to a first Wax Play experience, gradual warm-up and people who prefer less intense temperature play.
UV Candles: 50–55°C (122–131°F)
UV candles combine moderate warmth with fluorescent colour that glows under ultraviolet light. They are ideal for sensory scenes, photography and vivid wax patterns on the body.
Classic Wax Play candles: 55–60°C (131–140°F)
Classic candles create a stronger contrast of heat. They are better suited to people who already understand how their skin responds to warm wax or who want to increase the intensity gradually.
Strong! Candles: 60–65°C (140–149°F)
Strong! candles produce the hottest and most intense sensations in the Feral Feelings collection. They are intended only for experienced users who already understand their response to Wax Play and are prepared for greater intensity. A high pain tolerance does not eliminate the risk of burns, so this range requires careful testing, greater pouring distance and particularly close attention to the receiving partner’s skin and reactions.
The melting range describes the candle formula; it is not necessarily the exact temperature of a drop at the moment it reaches the skin. Pouring height, the amount of melted wax, drop size, room temperature and the sensitivity of the selected body area also affect the final sensation. You can learn more in our article, “What Temperature Is Safe for Wax Play?”
Wax Formula and Performance
Paraffin creates well-defined drops and clear patterns once the wax has set, while soy wax gives the blend a more flexible texture. Feral Feelings classic and UV formulas combine paraffin, soy wax and a hypoallergenic colourant. The wax melts consistently, does not smear once cooled and can be removed in large, flexible pieces.
A candle should not be judged by the name of a single ingredient. Its temperature, consistency and drop behaviour depend on the complete formula, the proportion of each component and any additional ingredients. A detailed comparison will be available in our article, “Paraffin or Soy Wax: Which Is Better for Wax Play?”
Colour and Scene Atmosphere
Colour does not determine the temperature of the wax, but it can completely change the atmosphere of a scene. Red and black create dramatic contrast, blue and purple introduce a cooler visual mood, green and pink make compositions brighter, and pastel tones are ideal for softer, lighter aesthetics.
Colours can be used separately or layered to create multicoloured designs. To keep the lines distinct, allow the previous layer to cool partially before applying the next one. More ideas can be found in our article, “Wax Play Candle Colours: Do They Change the Atmosphere of a Scene?”
UV Effect
Neon candles contain fluorescent pigment that reacts to ultraviolet, or blacklight, illumination. Under ordinary lighting, the wax retains a rich neon colour. Under a UV lamp, it begins to glow intensely, highlighting every drop, line and layer.
For the strongest visual effect, darken the room and use a genuine ultraviolet light source. An ordinary blue or purple lamp may not produce the same fluorescent result. Learn more about pigments, lighting and colour combinations in our article, “UV Wax Play Candles: How Fluorescent Wax Works.”

How to Use BDSM Candles More Safely
Wax Play should always be based on informed consent, communication and close attention to your partner’s reactions. Before beginning, discuss boundaries, preferred intensity and a safeword. Whenever you use a new candle or change technique, begin with a single test drop on a small area of skin.
For a first experience:
-
choose a low-temperature candle and begin on larger, less sensitive areas, such as the upper back or outer thighs;
-
apply the first drops from a greater distance so that they have more time to cool before reaching the skin;
-
do not apply wax to the face, eyes, mucous membranes, genitals, broken or irritated skin, fresh tattoos or areas with reduced sensitivity;
-
avoid hair, as hardened wax can be difficult and painful to remove;
-
protect furniture with a towel or a dedicated play covering;
-
keep flammable objects away from the flame and never leave a lit candle unattended;
-
check in with your partner regularly and stop immediately if they experience sharp pain, persistent burning or any other unwanted discomfort.
Even low-temperature wax will not feel comfortable to everyone. Heat sensitivity varies from person to person, which makes a slow start and continuous feedback more important than any standard technique. Before your first session, we also recommend reading “The Most Common Mistakes During Wax Play.”
How to Remove Wax After Wax Play
Wait until the wax has cooled and hardened completely. Gently lift the edge of the set wax with your fingers and remove it without sudden pulling. Feral Feelings wax has a flexible texture, so when used correctly it separates from the skin in large pieces, does not smear and generally does not leave significant colour staining.
Do not use knives, metal scrapers or other sharp objects. Small traces can be removed carefully with warm water or a product suitable for use on the skin. After the session, check the condition of the skin and allow it time to recover. For a step-by-step guide to protecting surfaces, removing wax from the body and cleaning the space, read “How to Remove Wax After Wax Play.”

Frequently Asked Questions About BDSM and Wax Play Candles
Can ordinary candles be used for Wax Play?
No. Household, scented, decorative, votive, gel and beeswax candles may melt at significantly higher temperatures or contain ingredients that are not intended for contact with the skin. Wax Play should only be performed with dedicated BDSM candles that have a known formula and a controlled melting range.
Can I use massage candles for Wax Play?
No. Massage candles are designed to melt into warm oils for massage, while Wax Play candles are formulated to create controlled drops and clearly defined temperature ranges for BDSM temperature play. These products behave differently on the skin and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Can Wax Play candles be used on every part of the body?
No. Wax should never be poured onto the face, eyes, mucous membranes, genitals, damaged or irritated skin, fresh tattoos or areas with reduced sensitivity. Beginners should start with larger, less sensitive areas such as the upper back or outer thighs and always test a single drop first.
What temperature do Feral Feelings Wax Play candles melt at?
The melting range depends on the collection: low-temperature candles melt at 45–50°C (113–122°F), neon UV candles at 50–55°C (122–131°F), classic candles at 55–60°C (131–140°F), and Strong! candles at 60–65°C (140–149°F). The exact range is stated in the specifications of each model. How a drop actually feels on the skin also depends on pouring height, drop size, the selected body area and individual sensitivity.
Does the wax stain the skin?
Once fully cooled, Feral Feelings wax can be removed in flexible pieces. When used correctly, it does not smear and generally does not generally leave significant staining.. Skin reactions can vary, so test a new candle on a small area before beginning a full session.
What makes UV candles different?
Neon UV candles contain fluorescent pigment that glows intensely under ultraviolet light. They create bright drops and patterns in a darkened room. Without a UV lamp, the wax remains neon pink or lime green but does not produce the full fluorescent effect.
Are Feral Feelings candles suitable for beginners who are trying Wax Play for the first time?
Yes, but beginners should start with a low-temperature model in the 45–50°C (113–122°F) range. Begin with one test drop from a greater distance and continue only while monitoring the receiving partner’s comfort. A controlled melting range does not replace basic safety precautions or careful communication.
Which candle is best for a first Wax Play experience?
For a first experience, we recommend a Feral Feelings low-temperature candle with a melting range of 45–50°C (113–122°F). It creates a gentler heat sensation, but you should still begin with one test drop, use a greater pouring distance and monitor the sensation continuously.
How far above the skin should I pour the wax?
Beginners should start at approximately 30–45 cm (12–18 in) above the skin. A greater distance gives each drop more time to cool before contact. Begin with one test drop, check the receiving partner’s reaction and adjust the height only gradually. Distance alone does not guarantee a comfortable temperature, so always consider the candle’s melting range, drop size and the sensitivity of the selected body area.
Does candle colour affect wax temperature?
Not directly. Temperature is determined by the formula of the specific range, not by the shade itself. For example, a pink candle may be a classic model, a light-pink low-temperature candle or a neon-pink UV candle, and each may have a different melting range.
Can several wax colours be combined?
Yes. Colours can be placed side by side or built into layered compositions. For cleaner patterns, allow the previous layer to cool slightly before applying the next one, and avoid concentrating too many hot drops on one area of skin.
Can candles from different temperature ranges be combined?
Yes, candles from different temperature ranges can be used during the same Wax Play session if both partners have agreed on the desired intensity. Begin with a low-temperature candle at 45–50°C (113–122°F), then move to a UV candle at 50–55°C (122–131°F) and a classic candle at 55–60°C (131–140°F) only if the receiving partner remains comfortable. Strong! candles at 60–65°C (140–149°F) should be introduced only by experienced users who already understand their response to hotter wax. Test every candle separately, allow each layer to cool and avoid applying repeated hot drops to the same area.
Can the candle be reused after the wax has cooled?
Yes. The candle itself can be extinguished, allowed to cool completely and relit during a future session. Before reusing it, check the wick and remove the charred tip if necessary. Wax that has already been applied to the body and removed from the skin should not be collected, remelted or returned to the candle.
Do UV candles glow without ultraviolet light?
Without ultraviolet lighting, UV candles retain a vivid neon-pink or lime-green colour but do not produce the full fluorescent glow. A UV lamp or blacklight is required to make the wax glow brightly and highlight each drop.
How should wax be removed after a session?
Wait until it has cooled completely, gently lift an edge and remove it with your fingers. Do not use sharp tools or pull the wax away suddenly. Small traces can be removed with warm water or a product suitable for use on the skin.
How long does a 150 g Wax Play candle last?
The exact burn time depends on the wick length, duration of each session, the angle at which the candle is held and the amount of wax applied to the body. During Wax Play, wax is used more quickly than when a candle is left to burn upright, so it would be misleading to give a fixed number of hours for a 150 g candle. It is designed to last for several sessions, but actual usage time depends on the chosen technique and application intensity. To make the candle last longer, do not leave it burning unnecessarily, extinguish it after each session and check the wick length before using it again.
